Society Introduction : Welcome message

The Korean Diabetes Association was established in 1968, and this year marks our 45th anniversary in the academic community. Around the time that we were established, diabetes was considered to be a rare disease affecting only 1% of the population. However, due to the sharp increase in obesity and the westernization of our lifestyle, diabetes is estimated to affect approximately 4 million individuals nationwide. If this trend persists, by 2025, 1 out of every 7 individuals will be afflicted with diabetes. Thus, the best interests and obligation of the Korean Diabetes Association is preventing this kind of diabetes outbreak.

There are currently 3,000 diabetes specialists, medical researchers, nurses, nutritionists, social workers, etc. registered with the Korean Diabetes Association, and there are approximately 20 specialized committees operating under the KDA as well. The Korean Diabetes Association homepage was originally created in 1998, and currently has 35,000 members including diabetes patients, family members of patients, and general members.

We are also working to establish an international program through membership registration from Korea-Japan diabetes symposiums and the International Diabetes Federation. From 2011, the Autumn Congress was changed to an international conference in preparation to be recognized as an international academic organization. However, despite these efforts, the achievement rate of glycemic control fell short of 50%, and is considered unsatisfactory in light of the occurrence of complications and the mortality rate in advanced countries. There are several reasons for this. Overall, improvements in the quality of care and education given to diabetes patients by health care providers are necessary. And also, increasing public awareness and interest about the importance of early diagnosis and prompt management of diabetes are necessary.

As the President of this organization, I am committed to transforming the Korean Diabetes Association into an international academic organization within the next two years. I am also preparing an advanced system worthy of our 45-year history. So, to our members, for the sake of fulfilling the goals of diabetes-specialized groups with me for the next two years, please give me your unwavering cooperation and support.

Thank you.
