Autonomic neuropathy could not be detected easily because of its diverse and vague symptoms and time-consuming examinations. In this study, we investigated the relationship between the Survey of Autonomic Symptoms (SAS) scales and the parameters of cardiac autonomic neuropathy (CAN) in Korean diabetic patients (30 healthy controls and 73 diabetic patients). SAS score was increased in patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) or CAN compared with those without. Thus SAS scale is a simple instrument that can be used to assess autonomic symptoms in diabetic patients and can be used as a screening tool for autonomic neuropathy, particularly for CAN.

To determine the genes related to metabolic syndrome, overlapping genes that are simultaneously decreased by peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPAR-γ) agonists while being increased in Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF) rats were identified using microarrays in two different models. Among the overlapping genes, lipocalin-2 expression was significantly decreased in the visceral adipose tissue of PPAR-γ agonist-treated db/db mice compared with standard diet-fed db/db mice, but it was significantly increased in OLETF rats compared with LETO rats. Furthermore, lipocalin-2 expression was significantly increased in the visceral adipose tissues of obese humans compared with non-obese humans and had significant positive correlations with various metabolic risk factors, suggesting an important role of lipocalin-2 in mediating metabolic disturbances.
