T1DM is most commonly diagnosed during puberty, but there still are patients that are diagnosed with T1DM after the age of 20. However, nationwide data regarding T1DM in Korea has been scarce. The available information regarding type 1 diabetes were only estimates of the data from the Registration Project of Type 1 diabetes and from T1DM code from claims data between June 2011 and August 2013 in Korea. The prevalence of T1DM over the course of the study was approximately 0.017% to 0.021% of the entire population of Korea, and the annual incidence of T1DM was 3.28:100,000 overall and 3.25:100,000 for Koreans less than 20 years old.

Diabetic cardiomyopathy is an important causal factor of morbidity and mortality among diabetic patients, and currently there are no effective means to reverse its pathological progress. Results of the current study showed that diabetes induced significant increases in cathepsin G, CRP, Hcy, and apo-B, as well as significant decreases in leptin and apo-A. Structural changes such as moderate fibrosis and mild to moderate heart and coronary muscle cells proliferation were also present in the heart of diabetic rats. Significant amelioration of heart tissue alteration and biochemical changes compared with those in controls were found in ginger extract-treated rats.
 
Increased Risk of Progression of Coronary Artery Calcification in Male Subjects with High Baseline Waist-to-Height Ratio: The Kangbuk Samsung Health Study. Diabetes Metab J 2016;40(1):54-61.
 
The waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) is an easy and inexpensive adiposity index that reflects central obesity. In this study, we examined the association between baseline WHtR and progression of coronary artery calcification (CAC) over 4 years of follow-up in 1,048 apparently healthy Korean men. The subjects with CAC progression had slightly but significantly higher baseline WHtR compared with those who did not show CAC progression, and the proportion of subjects with CAC progression significantly increased as the baseline WHtR increased from the 1st quartile to 4th quartile groups. The risk for CAC progression was significantly elevated in the 4th quartile group of baseline WHtR. We concluded that increased baseline WHtR was associated with increased risk for CAC progression.
