Vitamin D has several roles including glucose metabolism. This study sought to evaluate the associations between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) levels and insulin resistance in healthy Korean population. We found that lower serum 25(OH)D group had higher insulin resistance even after adjustments. Stratified subgroup analyses revealed that the association between 25(OH)D levels and insulin resistance is not amplified by abdominal obesity, although it is by general obesity. Our results suggest that serum 25(OH)D has an independent inverse association with insulin resistance in healthy, non-obese Korean population .
 
Rg3 Improves Mitochondrial Function and the Expression of Key Genes Involved in Mitochondrial Biogenesis in C2C12 Myotubes. Diabetes Metab J. 2016;40(5):406-413.
 
The ginsenoside Rg3 is one of the active components of Panax ginseng, which has glucose-lowering effects and improves insulin resistance. Because mitochondria play a pivotal role in insulin resistance of skeletal muscle, we investigated the effects of Rg3 on mitochondria in C2C12 myotubes. Rg3 treatment to C2C12 cells activated the insulin signaling pathway proteins and increased ATP production and oxygen consumption rate. Rg3 also increased the level of transcription factors related to mitochondrial biogenesis and expression of mitochondrial complexes. Our results suggest that Rg3 improves mitochondrial function and biogenesis, leading to an improvement in insulin resistance in skeletal muscle.

Serum glucose concentrations are often measured with automatic analyzers in health examinations, and these are used to screen for or diagnose glycemic states. We compared the applicability of fasting serum glucose level and Fasting plasma glucose (FPG) for the diagnosis of hyperglycemic states in real-life clinical situations. Our study enrolled hospital-based populations that were diagnosed with normoglycemia and Impaired Fasting Glucose (IFG) by measuring fasting serum glucose. We found that 20.9% had newly diagnosed diabetes according to their FPG levels. Of the participants with normoglycemia, 62.1% and 14.2% were newly diagnosed with IFG and diabetes, respectively, based on their fasting plasma glucose levels.
