Relationship between Regional Body Fat Distribution and Diabetes Mellitus: 2008 to 2010 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys. Diabetes Metab J. 2017;41(1):51-59. |
We investigated the association between regional body fat distribution and the prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM). As the leg fat mass increased, the risk of DM decreased. Even after adjusting for confounding factors, the risk of DM decreased gradually with increase of leg fat mass. We also found that the patients with high leg fat mass had significantly low risk of DM even though their leg muscle mass decreased. Our findings suggest that leg adiposity independently associated with favorable glucose metabolism. Furthermore, the contributory effects of lower extremity fat on DM are more dominant than those of lower extremity muscle. |

Application of the 2013 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association Cholesterol Guideline to the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys from 1998 to 2012. Diabetes Metab J. 2017;41(1):38-50. |
We investigated the trends in the proportion of Korean adults considered eligible for statin therapy according to the 2013 ACC/AHA guideline for the treatment of blood cholesterol. Data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (KNHANES) I-V (1998-2012) were analyzed. The percentage of the statin benefit groups increased from 17.0% (1998) to 22.0% (2012). Given the dramatic socio-behavioral changes and rapid aging of the population that have been found in many Asian countries, more people living in this region will benefit from statin therapy in the near future. |

Exenatide versus Insulin Lispro Added to Basal Insulin in a Subgroup of Korean Patients with Type 2 Diabetes. Diabetes Metab J 2017;41(1):69-74. |
We conducted a subgroup analysis of data from a multinational, 30-week, randomized, open-label trial to compare the effects of exenatide twice daily with that of three times daily mealtime insulin lispro among Korean patients with T2DM inadequately controlled (HbA1c > 7.0%) on metformin plus optimized insulin glargine. Both exenatide twice daily and insulin lispro three times daily reduced HbA1c (mean 닋1.5% and 닋1.0%, respectively; P < 0.01). This result showed that treatment with exenatide twice daily improved glycemic control without weight gain in Korean patients with T2DM who were unable to achieve glycemic control on metformin plus basal insulin. |
