We are developing a glucose area under the curve (AUC) monitoring system that does not require blood sampling using a minimally invasive interstitial fluid extraction technology (MIET). We evaluated the accuracy of AUC measured by MIET for 8 hours to detect hyperglycemia using CGM data in patients with diabetes. A significant correlation was observed between the predicted AUC by MIET and CGM in daytime and nighttime. The optimal cutoff for the AUC value by MIET was 88.2% sensitivity and 81.5% specificity for prediction of hyperglycemia over 200 mg/dL. The results support the feasibility of this technique for screening hyperglycemia in patients with diabetes.
 
Effects of High-Dose α-Lipoic Acid on Heart Rate Variability of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients with Cardiac Autonomic Neuropathy in Korea. Diabetes Metab J. 2017 Aug;41(4):275-283.
 
We performed a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study to compare the effects of high dose α-lipoic acid on heart rate variability (HRV) of type 2 diabetic patients with cardiac autonomic neuropathy (CAN). In this multicenter trial, 75 patients were randomly assigned to one of two groups. One group received 600 mg/day of α-lipoic acid (ALA) orally for the first 12 weeks and then 1,200 mg/day for the next 12 weeks. The other group received placebo treatment for 24 weeks. Although there were no statistically significant HRV changes in the ALA group compared to the placebo group after 24 weeks of trial, we found a positive tendency in some of the HRV parameters (standard deviations of normal-to-normal RR intervals, low frequency (LF) and high frequency/LF ratio) of the ALA group. There were no differences in adverse events in the two groups. We conclude that high dose α-lipoic acid had minimal effects on HRV of type 2 diabetic patients with CAN.
 
In Vitro Effect of Fatty Acids Identified in the Plasma of Obese Adolescents on the Function of Pancreatic β-Cells. Diabetes Metab J. 2017 Aug;41(4):303-315.
 
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of free fatty acids–reconstituted according to circulating fatty acid profile found in obese adolescents–on the viability and function of murine insulinoma cell line (MIN6). High FFA content and high polyunsaturated ω6/ω3 ratio, present in plasma of obese adolescent with metabolic syndrome, had a toxic effect on MIN6 cell viability and function, increasing oxidative stress and decreasing glucose-dependent insulin secretion. These results could help to guide nutritional management of young obese people in order to reduce the likelihood of β cell deterioration and the eventual development of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.
