Self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) is important to achieve optimal glycemic control for type 1 diabetes mellitus patients. Especially, adolescents show poor compliance to SMBG. We analyzed the relationship between the frequency of SMBG and HbA1c and other factors that affect the frequency of SMBG. As the frequency of SMBG increased, HbA1c levels decreased (-0.42%). SMBG at school has a decisive effect on total daily SMBG. When adolescents are aided by friends and conduct SMBG in classrooms, their compliance will be better.

Skeletal muscle plays a major role in glucose metabolism. We investigated the association between thigh muscle mass, insulin resistance, and incident type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) risk over a 10-year follow-up in Japanese Americans. This prospective study demonstrated that baseline thigh muscle mass area was inversely associated with future insulin resistance. We also observed an interaction between thigh muscle area and body mass index in relation to T2DM. Greater thigh muscle area predicts a lower risk of incident T2DM for leaner Japanese Americans.

HbA1c variability, an index for long-term glucose fluctuation, has been shown to be an independent risk factor for various diabetic complications in subjects with diabetes. This study aimed to investigate whether the presence and severity of cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (CAN) are associated with future HbA1c variability in subjects with type 2 diabetes. CAN was an independent predictor of higher HbA1c variability and there was a linear association between baseline CAN severity and the degree of HbA1c variability. CAN should be considered not only for cardiovascular risk stratification but also for establishing strategies for optimal glycemic control.
