This cross-sectional study investigated the association between appendicular skeletal muscle mass and insulin resistance (homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance, HOMA-IR) among 399 community-dwelling older adults. HOMA-IR was independently and inversely associated with appendicular skeletal muscle mass, particularly in elderly men. Our findings reaffirms that age-related muscle loss can contribute to increased insulin resistance.

Diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration are considered as the two most important causes of visual loss worldwide, but there is little information regarding treatment results for eyes that have both conditions. Eyes with choroidal neovascularization due to age-related macular degeneration and concurrent diabetic retinopathy may have a different disease course and anti-VEGF treatment response due to the underlying changes of the choriocapillaries and high VEGF concentration in diabetic retinopathy. In this study, stabilization of vision and choroidal neovascular membrane were achieved after anti-VEGF agent injections but with limited visual improvement. Early intervention and more frequent treatment regimen may be needed for these patients.
 
Economic Impact of Combining Metformin with Dipeptidyl Peptidase-4 Inhibitors in Diabetic Patients with Renal Impairment in Spanish Patients. Diabetes Metab J 2015;39:74-81.
 
To evaluate resource use and health costs due to the combination of metformin and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors in patients with diabetes and renal impairment, an observational, retrospective study was performed. Patients aged ≥ 30 years treated with metformin who initiated a second oral antidiabetic treatment in 2009-2010 were included. Of 395 patients (70.2 years, 56.5% male), those receiving DPP-4 inhibitors showed lower rate of hypoglycaemia (20.0% vs. 47.7%) and total costs (€2,486 vs. €3,002), p < 0.05. Patients with renal impairment treated with DPP-4 inhibitors had lower rates of hypoglycaemia and health costs for the Spanish national health system.
