Improvement of Glycosylated Hemoglobin in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus under Insulin Treatment by Reimbursement for Self-Monitoring of Blood Glucose. Diabetes Metab J. 2018 Feb;42(1):28-42.

In Korea, a new nationwide reimbursement program for self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) for patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) under insulin treatment was introduced in November 2015. We investigated whether this new reimbursement program has improved the glycemic control in the beneficiaries of this policy. The reimbursement for SMBG significantly improved HbA1c in T2D subjects using insulin, and it was more prominent in subjects with poor glucose control at baseline or those covered under the Medical Aid system.

Serum Betatrophin Concentrations and the Risk of Incident Diabetes: A Nested Case-Control Study from Chungju Metabolic Disease Cohort. Diabetes Metab J. 2018 Feb;42(1):53-62.

Circulating levels of betatrophin are known to be altered in various metabolic diseases. This study examined the predictive value of serum betatrophin levels for incident diabetes by performing a nested, case-control study using Chungju Metabolic disease Cohort. Subjects in the highest baseline quartile of betatrophin levels had more than a threefold higher risk of incident diabetes than the subjects in the lowest quartile. This data suggests that circulating levels of betatrophin could be a potential biomarker for predicting new-onset diabetes.

Color Doppler Ultrasonography Is a Useful Tool for Diagnosis of Peripheral Artery Disease in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients with Ankle-Brachial Index 0.91 to 1.40. Diabetes Metab J. 2018 Feb;42(1):63-73.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is strongly associated with cardiovascular mortality and lower extremity amputation in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). The use of ankle-brachial index (ABI) is commonly recommended for screening of PAD in patients with DM. However, in our study, 25.2% of patients with DM and ABI 0.91 to 1.40 were diagnosed with PAD by color Doppler ultrasonography. Older age, current smoking status, presence of leg symptoms, and high carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) were significantly associated with the presence of PAD in patients with ABI 0.91 to 1.40. This study shows that color Doppler ultrasonography could be useful for the detection of PAD for patients with DM and a normal or borderline ABI. Color Doppler ultrasonography could be considered for not only symptomatic but also asymptomatic patients who have ABI 0.91 to 1.40 and a high CIMT.
