This article describes the trial protocol for the hospital-based Korean Diabetes Prevention Study (H-KDPS). H-KDPS is a prospective, multi-center, randomized, open-label controlled study conducted for the purpose of gathering data to help in efforts to prevent type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). The subjects were randomly assigned to standard care group, lifestyle modification group, or metformin group, and their clinical course will be observed for 36 months. All intervention methodologies were developed, validated, and approved by Korean Diabetes Association multi-disciplinary team members. The primary endpoint of this study is the cumulative incidence of DM during the 3 years after randomization.
 
High Proportion of Adult Cases and Prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome in Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus Population in Korea: A Nationwide Study. Diabetes Metab J. 2019 Feb;43(1):76-89.
 
We explored the incidence and prevalence of type 1 diabetes in all age groups over a period of seven years and estimated the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in patients with type 1 diabetes compared it with that in age- and sex-matched patients with type 2 diabetes in Korea using the National Health Insurance Service database. Our results suggest a relatively high incidence and prevalence of type 1 diabetes in adults, especially for the atypical form of type 1 diabetes. They also indicate that metabolic syndrome may be a frequent finding in individuals with type 1 diabetes in Korea.

Sarcopenic obesity is a serious public health concern. We evaluated the prevalence of the newly diagnosed, drug-naïve type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with low muscle mass and abdominal obesity (LMAO) and its association with insulin resistance and other diabetic complications in the Korea Guro Diabetes Program (KGDP) cohort. The proportion of subjects with LMAO was 8.2% (men 7.4% vs. women 9.0%). Insulin resistance varied with body composition. In other words, it increases in people with less muscle mass compared with normal and increases more in LMAO than in abdominal obesity only; individuals with LMAO exhibited the highest risk for insulin resistance.
