Factors Associated with Participation in Diabetes Education: The Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007 to 2009. Diabetes Metab J. 2016;40(6):447-453.
 
We investigated the factors associated with participation in diabetes education. The study included 1,255 patients (≥19 years old) diagnosed with diabetes drawn from the total population of Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2007 to 2009, comprising 30,705 individuals. Of the 1,255 patients, 19.8% (n=248) had received diabetes education. Logistic regression analysis revealed that longer diabetes duration increased the likelihood of receiving diabetes education. Junior high school and elementary school education levels (versus college graduation) were inversely correlated with participation in diabetes self-management education. Non-insulin therapy reduced the likelihood of receiving diabetes education.

Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is often accompanied by diabetic retinopathy (DR) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, some patients do not develop DKD despite the presence of advanced DR. We conducted a cross-sectional study in 317 patients with T2DM and advanced DR. The prevalence of DKD was 62.8% in these patients. Indices of HbA1c variability and the TG/HDL-C ratio were significantly associated with albuminuria and GFR, and were independent risk factors for the presence of severe DKD. Glycemic variability and dyslipidemia may affect the development and progression of DKD in patients with T2DM and advanced DR.

This long-term, prospectively designed cohort study with regular comprehensive eye examinations was performed to evaluate the natural course and predictive factors of diabetic retinopathy (DR) among patients with type 2 diabetes in Korea. We found that glycemic control, duration of diabetes, age, and albuminuria are important risk factors for the development of DR.
Glycemic control was the most important modifiable factor, even in the patients with a long duration of diabetes. Annual to biennial screening for DR in accordance with current guidelines may be sufficient in patients without DR. However, for the patients with early stage of DR, more aggressive and frequent screening is needed for early detection of DR progression. Further identification of novel markers for the residual risk of DR is also needed.
