In [Diabetes Fact Sheet 2018], we added glycated hemoglobin in addition to fasting blood glucose as a diagnostic criteria of diabetes. As a result, the prevalence of diabetes among adults 30 years and older rose from 13% to 14.4% in 2016. With the use of glycated hemoglobin for diagnosis, about 500 thousand more adults are diagnosed to having diabetes. However, only one of 4 patients with diabetes gets the glycemic target, and blood glucose, blood pressure, and cholesterol were all well controlled at the target level in less than 10% of patients. Therefore, more active, comprehensive management of diabetic patients is needed. In this fact sheet, in order to estimate the burden of chronic disease in Korea, level, we extracted the number of people with treatment for hypertension, diabetes, or dyslipidemmia from the big data of National Health Insurance Service in collaboration with the Korean Society of Hypertension and the Korean Society of Lipid and Atherosclerosis.
The prevalence of diabetes, estimated percentage, level of management, comorbidities, and health behaviors were determined from data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) conducted by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC), and the current status of treatment of diabetes was analyzed through the health insurance data of the National Health Insurance Service.
