Impact of Socioeconomic Status on Health Behaviors, Metabolic Control, and Chronic Complications in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Diabetes Metab J. 2018 Oct;42(5):380-393. |
Low socioeconomic status (SES) can have an unfavorable impact on health. This study aimed to evaluate the role of SES on glycemic control, microvascular complications and health behaviors in Korean men and women with type 2 diabetes. In women, lower income was associated with a higher stress level. In men, lower education level was associated with worse glycemic control, and lower income was associated with a higher rate of diabetic retinopathy. These results support the need for improved care, especially for men with lower education and/or income. |

Ten-Year Mortality Trends for Adults with and without Diabetes Mellitus in South Korea, 2003 to 2013. Diabetes Metab J. 2018 Oct;42(5):394-401. |
Diabetes mellitus has become a serious health problem worldwide, particularly for developing countries in Asia. However, diabetes-related mortality in this region has not been clearly elucidated. We performed annual mortality rate analysis in adults ≥30 years old with and without diabetes using the Korean National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) database. Age- and sex-adjusted all-cause mortality rates decreased consistently in both groups from 2003 to 2013, whereas the slope decreased more sharply in subjects with diabetes than those without. Cardiovascular mortality decreased robustly in Korean people with diabetes, and the main cause of this decrease was the reduction in ischemic stroke mortality. |

Diabetes Fact Sheet in Korea, 2016: An Appraisal of Current Status. Diabetes Metab J. 2018 Oct;42(5):415-424. |
Diabetes is an important health problem around the world, and Korea is one of the countries with the largest and highest region of International Diabetes Federation. With the recognition of the rising burden of diabetes in Korea, the KDA published Diabetes Fact Sheets since 2012. This updated data showed that about 4.8 million (13.7%) adults (≥30 years old) had diabetes, but 29.3% are not aware of their condition and only 23.3% reached the target of HbA1c <6.5%. It is critical to monitor this situation continuously and to establish a program for the prevention and management of diabetes in Korea. |
