Based on the fact that the risk of new-onset diabetes increases with statin treatment, especially when used at a high dosage, and that there are additional cardiovascular benefits by combining ezetimibe to statin therapy, we aimed to compare the efficacy of 20 mg rosuvastatin monotherapy with that of 5 mg rosuvastatin/10 mg ezetimibe combination therapy in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Both lipid-lowering regimens showed a comparable LDL cholesterol reduction. However, reductions in triglycerides and free fatty acids were greater in the combination therapy group than in the monotherapy group. Thus, low-dose statin and ezetimibe combination regimen, in place of high-dose statin regimen, could be a reasonable option for the treatment of dyslipidemia in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Pregnant women with one abnormal value (OAV) in a 100 g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) were reported to have an increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. To identify clinical predictors for GDM, we identified 137 women with OAV and repeated the second OGTT at 32 - 34 weeks of gestational age. About 30% of women with OAV in the initial OGTT progressed to GDM in the second OGTT. Clinical parameter predicting progression to GDM was not found. This study suggests that repeating the OGTT in women with OAV in the initial test may be helpful to detect GDM progression.
 
Longitudinal Changes of Body Composition Phenotypes and Their Association with Incident Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus during a 5-Year Follow-up in Koreans. Diabetes Metab J. 2019 Oct;43(5):627-639.
 
This study examined 5-year changes of body composition phenotypes and their association with incident type 2 diabetes (T2DM) in Korean adults. Body composition phenotypes were defined by appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) index and fat mass index measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis. With increasing age, fat mass tended to increase and ASM tended to decrease. The group maintaining high muscle/low fat phenotype showed lower incidence of T2DM compared with the low muscle/low fat or low muscle/high fat groups. ASM index was inversely associated with the risk of incident diabetes regardless of obesity status, underscoring the protective effect of ASM against development of T2DM.
 
Dipeptidyl Peptidase-4 Inhibitors versus Other Antidiabetic Drugs Added to Metformin Monotherapy in Diabetic Retinopathy Progression: A Real World-Based Cohort Study. Diabetes Metab J. 2019 Oct;43(5):640-648.
 
We investigated the effects of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor (DPP4i) as an add-on medication to metformin on the progression of diabetic retinopathy in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The use of DPP4i was associated with lower risk of diabetic retinopathy progression compared to sulfonylurea (age and sex-adjusted HR, 0.74; 95% CI, 0.62 to 0.89). This population-based cohort study showed that the use of DPP4i as an add-on did not increase the risk of diabetic retinopathy progression, so DPP4i can be considered as a safe second-line antidiabetic medication in patients with diabetic retinopathy.
